Highway 48
Highway 48 Starship Launch Viewing Guide
Watching a SpaceX Starship launch from the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, is a breathtaking experience, but the crowds at the primary parks can be overwhelming. If you want a more flexible vantage point that bypasses the gridlock of South Padre Island, Highway 48 is one of the best kept secrets for rocket enthusiasts.
Why View from Highway 48?
Located on the coastal stretch between Brownsville and Port Isabel, Highway 48 offers a massive, unobstructed horizon. It is particularly popular for photographers who want to capture the “wide-angle” scale of the worldβs most powerful rocket against the South Texas wetlands.
-
Distance from Pad: Approximately 6β8 miles.
-
The View: You get a side-on profile of the Starship and Super Heavy booster on the launch mount.
-
Traffic Advantage: Unlike Isla Blanca Park, which has a single point of entry/exit, Highway 48 allows for a quicker departure toward Brownsville or Harlingen once the flight is over.
Top Highway 48 Viewing Tips
-
Mind the Construction: Be aware of ongoing LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) facility construction in this corridor. Construction traffic can be heavy, and certain areas may be marked as “No Parking.”
-
Find a Safe Pull-off: Use established dirt turnouts and ensure your vehicle is completely off the main roadway. Local law enforcement strictly enforces safety along this high-speed state highway.
-
Bring a Zoom Lens: While the view is wide and clear, you are slightly further away than at Isla Blanca. A 200mm to 600mm lens is ideal for capturing the roar of the Raptor engines at ignition.
